Ghosts and Chimes.

The title is that of the fifth movement of a piano piece written ca. 1984. Here I’ve arranged it for Brass Band and Pitched Percussion. The piece has a non-standard format and is all the better for it. The Ghosts and Chimes riff sets up and has a few permutations, then it starts building, at which point a really cool kit part kicks in and carries it forward to the climax in the middle of the piece. The tune has soared up above the riff, but then descends to the bottom of the band again. The entire second half of the (short) piece is the riff, halted and dismantled, with the gradual introduction of chromatic non-riff notes, played and conducted at random.
