The Scourged Back.
Price range: £450.00 through £500.00
The true story of Whipped Peter, a slave on a Louisiana plantation, who on Christmas Day 1862 was tortured so badly that he very died. He realised that another thrashing would be the end for him, so he managed to escape, and, incredibly, made it across country to a Union Army camp at Baton Rouge. I wrote this piece in 2023 for brass band, here is the full orchestra version.
Description
In 2023, I wrote this piece for band, telling the true story of a whipped-almost-to-death slave on a Louisiana plantation in 1863. This, finally is the fully orchestrated version. ‘Whipped Peter’ escaped, and was chased across the swamps until he made it to the Union Army settlement at Baton Rouge. It’s a story that should be told, and I don’t think anyone has done so in music yet.
